How many times can you take the California DMV written test?
Three. The handbook is direct about it: you are allowed three attempts to pass before you must reapply — which means a new application and paying the non-refundable fee again.
The seven-day wait is for minors
This is the detail most sites get wrong. The handbook says minors must wait seven days to retake a failed knowledge test, not counting the day of the failure. It does not set that same waiting period for everyone, so if you are over 18 it is worth asking rather than assuming you have to wait a week.
You cannot bring anything in with you
No testing aids of any kind — the handbook names a copy of the California Driver's Handbook itself and a cell phone as examples. Three attempts and nothing to lean on is a good reason to arrive already sure.
Half of first-time adults fail the first attempt
The DMV's own evaluation put the first-attempt fail rate at 50.1% for adults getting a first license. It is not an easy test, and going in cold burns one of your three.
