California has a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for teenagers to ensure they receive sufficient education and practice. If you are under 18, you must meet additional requirements beyond just passing the permit test.
Driver Education
You must complete a DMV-approved driver education program before getting your permit. This can be done through:

Hold Permit for 6 Months
If you are under 18, you must:
- Hold the instruction permit for at least 6 months before taking the driving test
If you turn 18 before completing the 6 months, this rule is waived, though ample practice is still strongly recommended.
Keep a Clean Record
During your permit period:
- Avoid tickets and accidents
- Violations can delay your progress or require remedial training
