License Renewal and Additional Notes

A California driver’s license expires on your 5th birthday following the date you applied — so, in practice, it is valid for 5 years and always runs out on your birthday. (Source: dmv.ca.gov; the handbook does not state the period.)

You may renew from 90 days before the expiry date up to 12 months after it. There are no late fees for renewing one that has already expired — but driving on it is still illegal.

🔄 License Renewal

  • You can often renew:

    • By mail
    • Online
    • Or in person (which may include a new vision test and possibly a written test)
      • Especially if you have certain medical conditions or a history of accidents
  • The DMV sends a renewal notice to your address of record about 90 days before your licence expires. If it doesn’t arrive, apply anyway — the deadline still stands.

⚠️ From age 70 onward, renewal must be in person and you must pass a vision test. Other exams may be required.

Always renew before your license expires — driving with an expired license is illegal.

If you are out of state and cannot renew, you may request a one-year extension by email before your licence expires. Limited-term licences are not eligible.

🧾 Lost License / Address Change

  • If you lose your license, you can apply for a duplicate by:

    • Submitting a new application
    • Paying a replacement fee
  • If you move, you are legally required to:

    • Update your address with the DMV within 10 days

✈️ REAL ID

Since May 2025, a standard California driver’s license is no longer accepted for:

  • Boarding domestic flights
  • Entering military bases
  • Entering most federal facilities

To comply, consider applying for a REAL ID license, which includes a special marking.

To get a REAL ID, you must provide additional documentation:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., passport or birth certificate)
  • Two proofs of California residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreement)

If you don’t get a REAL ID, you’ll need a passport or other federally accepted ID for air travel and federal building access.

❤️ Organ Donation & 🎖️ Veterans

  • At license issuance or renewal, you can opt to register as an organ donor

    • A red heart symbol will be added to your license
    • This is completely voluntary
  • U.S. military veterans can request a “VETERAN” marking by providing:

    • Proof of military service, such as a DD214 form
