California’s roads range from multi-lane freeways to narrow two-lane roads. Knowing how to choose the correct lane and change lanes properly is essential for smooth and safe driving.
🔢 Lane Numbering
- On multi-lane roads:
- Leftmost lane (fast lane) = Lane #1
- Next to the right = Lane #2
- Next right = Lane #3, and so on
⬅️➡️ Keep Right, Pass Left
- Slower vehicles should stay in the rightmost lanes
- Left lane is generally for passing or turning left
- It’s not illegal to cruise in the left lane, but:
- Move right if others want to pass
- Don’t block the left lane or try to enforce other drivers’ speeds
🔁 Changing Lanes: Safe Practices
✅ Before Changing Lanes:
- Signal early (at least 5 seconds before on freeway)
- Check mirrors
- Look over your shoulder to check your blind spot
- Left lane change: look over left shoulder
- Right lane change: look over right shoulder
- Do not rely only on mirrors or cameras
🚗 During Lane Change:
- Maintain steady speed or slightly accelerate to match lane flow
- Avoid braking during lane changes unless necessary
⚠️ Yielding and Courtesy:
- Yield to vehicles already in the lane — they have the right-of-way
- Do not cut off others or force them to brake
- If there’s no gap, wait — do not expect others to slow for you
🚧 One Lane at a Time
- Change only one lane at a time
- No sudden multi-lane weaving
🔊 Be Predictable
- Always signal turns and lane changes
- City driving: Signal 100 feet before
- Freeway: Signal at least 5 seconds before
- Signal does not guarantee right-of-way — it’s a request
🚫 No Lane Changes Near Intersections
- Avoid changing lanes in or near intersections
- Get into the correct lane before the intersection
↪️ Passing on the Right
You may pass on the right if:
- There are 2+ lanes in your direction, or
- The vehicle ahead is turning left, and the road is wide enough
Do not leave the pavement to pass
🚗💨 Carpool (HOV) Lanes
- Found in the far-left lane, marked with a diamond symbol and the words Carpool Lane
- Reserved for:
- Vehicles carrying the minimum number of people posted on the signs (usually 2 or 3)
- Motorcycles, unless otherwise posted
- Signs at the on-ramp or along the road also list the hours when the HOV rules apply
- Do not use unless you qualify
- Enter/exit only at broken double lines
- Never cross solid double lines
⚠️ Clean Air Vehicle decals no longer work. The federal program that let a low-emission or zero-emission vehicle use the carpool lane with a single occupant ended on September 30, 2025. Since October 1, 2025, every driver must meet the posted occupancy requirement — decal or no decal — or risk a citation.
↔️ Center Left-Turn Lanes
- Marked by parallel yellow lines (inner broken, outer solid)
- Used for:
- Left turns from either direction
- Permitted U-turns
- Only drive up to 200 feet in this lane
- Never use it for passing or as a travel lane
🔄 Lane Discipline in Turns
- Right turns: Start and end in the rightmost lane
- Left turns:
- Start in leftmost lane
- Turn into a corresponding lane unless signs indicate otherwise
- If there are multiple turn lanes, stay in your designated lane throughout the turn
- Do not drift or swing wide
⚠️ No Passing Zones
- Solid yellow line on your side = Do not pass
- Double solid yellow lines = No passing in either direction
- Broken yellow line on your side = Pass if safe and clear
- Obey No Passing Zone signs (often a pennant on the left side)
📏 Three-Second Rule (Following Distance)
- Always leave at least a 3-second gap in good conditions
- Choose a fixed point ahead
- If you reach it less than 3 seconds after the car in front — fall back
- In poor weather or behind large vehicles, leave 4+ seconds
🚴 Passing Bicycles and Motorcycles
Bicycles:
- Bicyclists have the right to use the full lane
- To pass a bicyclist in the travel lane, you may need to change to another lane — pass safely, then return to your original lane. Changing lanes is the rule, not the exception.
- Only when you cannot change lanes must you allow at least 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicyclist
- If you cannot give 3 feet, do not pass until you can
- Enter a bike lane no more than 200 feet before starting a turn, and merge safely behind a bicyclist when preparing to turn
Motorcycles:
- May legally lane split in slow traffic
- Check mirrors carefully before lane changes
- Never share a lane side-by-side — treat motorcycles as full vehicles
🧭 Missed a Turn or Exit?
- Do NOT swerve or cut across lanes
- Go to the next safe opportunity to turn around
It’s better to go an extra block than risk a collision
