Other Intersection Tips

Proper behavior at intersections improves traffic flow and prevents crashes. Below are key points to keep in mind:

🟢 Fresh vs. Stale Green Lights

  • A fresh green just turned from red:
    • Be cautious entering immediately — someone may be running their red light
  • A stale green has been green for a while:
    • Be ready for it to turn yellow
    • Cover your brake and prepare to stop

🟡 Yellow Light Decisions

  • If approaching a yellow light:
    • You must stop if you can do so safely before entering the intersection
  • If you’re too close to stop safely:
    • Proceed cautiously
    • Do not speed up to “beat” the red
  • Entering the intersection after the light turns red is:
    • Illegal
    • Dangerous
    • Could result in a traffic ticket or crash

⛔ Blocked Intersection (Gridlock)

  • Do not enter an intersection unless you can fully clear it
  • If traffic is backed up, wait before proceeding
  • Blocking the intersection when your light turns red is:
    • Illegal
    • Causes gridlock and delays cross traffic

🤝 Courtesy at Intersections

  • Use eye contact or a wave to communicate at 4-way stops
  • However, never insist on going if someone else seems confused or eager
    • Safety first, even if you have the legal right-of-way

🚦 Final Note

Following proper turning and intersection rules helps:

  • Keep traffic flowing smoothly
  • Prevent collisions

Many crashes occur at intersections due to failing to yield or improper turns — always approach with caution, awareness, and readiness to stop or yield.
