Topic 4 · Section 13

Traffic and Road Conditions

🚗 Heavy Traffic

  • In rush hour or dense traffic, leave more space, not less.
  • Sometimes going slightly slower than the pack can give you more reaction time and reduce the need for frequent braking.
  • In stop-and-go conditions, expect lower speeds and avoid aggressive lane changes — they rarely help and increase risk.

🌀 Curvy or Hilly Roads

  • Slow down before curves. If a yellow warning sign says “30 mph,” it’s for good reason — especially important in larger or top-heavy vehicles.
  • Going downhill? Use engine braking (downshift) to control speed and avoid overheating brakes.
  • Going uphill? You usually don’t need to slow unless your vehicle is struggling.

🛤 Gravel or Dirt Roads

  • These have reduced traction — drive slower, especially when turning or stopping.
  • You may slide easily or need longer braking distances.

🚧 Work Zones

  • Typically have lower speed limits, unexpected lane changes, and workers near the road.
  • Fines double in many California work zones — slow down for safety and your wallet.

💰 Toll Plazas or Lane Merges

  • Approach toll booths or merging zones with caution — speeds drop quickly.
  • Watch for sudden braking or lane narrowing signs to avoid rear-end collisions.
