Merging and Right-of-Way Courtesy

Sharing the road means cooperation, not competition. Here’s how to merge and yield courteously and safely:

• 🚧 Zipper Merge: When two lanes reduce to one, take turns like teeth on a zipper — one car from each lane alternating.
  → Don’t try to speed ahead or block others. This keeps traffic flowing more smoothly.

• 🛣️ Highway Courtesy: Already on the freeway? If safe, move one lane left to give space to on-ramp traffic trying to merge.

• 🚗 If You’re Merging:

  • Use the acceleration lane to match traffic speed.
  • Signal early and find a safe gap.
  • Don’t stop at the end of the ramp unless traffic is jammed — that’s risky.

• 🛑 4-Way Stops:

  • If two vehicles arrive at the same time:
    • The one going straight usually goes before a left turner.
    • A polite wave can help resolve confusion.
    • When in doubt, yield — better safe than sorry.

• 🐢 Let Faster Cars Pass:

  • If 5 or more vehicles are behind you on a two-lane road, use a turnout or shoulder when safe to let them by (California law requires it).

• 🛑 Left Lane Etiquette:

  • Don’t cruise in the passing lane (left lane) on highways.
  • Keep right unless actively passing slower traffic.
