How the Florida exam works
The knowledge exam is statewide and uniform — the same 50 questions rules whether you take it in Miami or in Pensacola.
What the exam covers
Three subjects, straight from the handbook: Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices, and identifying traffic controls — signs, signals, and pavement markings.
What it takes to pass
FLHSMV requires 80%: at least 40 of the 50 questions right. Fail it and a written re-test costs $10 — most first-time takers who fail simply never studied the handbook.
Starting at 15
Florida's learner's license starts at 15: complete the TLSAE course, pass the vision screening, and pass this knowledge exam.
New to Florida?
If you move to Florida and take a job — or enroll your kids in a Florida public school — you must get your Florida license within 30 days.
Where you take it
At a driver license service center or with an FLHSMV-approved third-party provider. Students under 18 may take the knowledge exam online.
