Topic 2 · Requirements and Process
What vision standard must you meet for a permit?
- No vision requirement
- 20/40 vision with or without correction — correct answer
- 20/20 vision only
Why
You must pass the DMV vision test, corrected or uncorrected. If you cannot, your eye doctor completes a Report of Vision Examination (DL 62). The 20/40 figure comes from dmv.ca.gov, not from the handbook.

Reading one answer is not the same as sitting the test. The simulator runs the first-time adult form: 36 questions, 6 mistakes allowed, 83% to pass.
